Rebecca Black: Living her dream… or a nightmare?

Every child dreams of becoming famous. Either being a movie star, rock star, famous model or athlete. For one little girl, that dream recently came true… but has turned into a potential nightmare. Rebecca Black, a 13-year-old from Anaheim Hills, CA is feeling the power of social media and both the love and hatred of millions of people around the world.

In February, Ark Music Factory released Black’s video for the song “Friday” on YouTube. The song was prewritten by Clarence Jay and Patrice Wilson as part of a recording package the studio offers. Their intention is to help aspiring singers break into the recording industry and gain some recording experience. The video slowly gained views until one night Black went to bed with 4,000 views and woke up with over 70,000. The next day it was over 200,000. Her song had gone viral.

Then the dream turned into a nightmare. Comments started appearing on YouTube…
“This has got to be the sh**tiest song on the planet. The lyrics are a f**king joke. urrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”  (alicefaye17)
“stupidest song ever....worst than Kim Kardashian's laughable song, and I didnt think that was possible!” (suzie4everable)
“jack black killed comedy… rebecca black killed music” (CharlieBrownreal)
… and these were the nice ones.

The YouTube video now has over 16 million views and over 170,000 comments, most of which are bashing the teen. The sad part of this whole ordeal is she really is not a horrible singer. She has some undeveloped talent and is a member of Celebration, USA, a patriotic singing group. She has performed in musical theater and even sung the Star Spangled Banner at Angels Stadium. No mean feat… that song is hard!

She’s got a good attitude, too, at least publicly. She said she’s excited because even those who say they don’t like the song also say it’s stuck in their head. She tries not to take the comments personally and is just enjoying the ride.

I give this kid credit. Fame is difficult to handle at any age and negative attention at such a young age can be painful. The song is pretty bad but I’m not convinced it’s her fault. I’ll let you decide…
